The Longing of the Heart and September 11

The email from my friend read, "I would like to be with you on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, remembering those who died or were harmed by the tragedy, and pray for Christ's mercy and peace through the intercession of Our Lady. I ask you to join me in the recitation of the rosary with short meditations by Fr. Giussani."

And so we did. A small band of Brooklynites gathered at Owl's Head pier, jutting out into New York Harbor, in plain sight of the enormous absence that still dominates the skyline.

We huddled and we prayed. Because in the face of the incomprehensible past and present, neither politics nor recrimination satisfies the cry for justice and peace.

We prayed for a real presence capable of answering this most fundamental cry of the human heart.

More about this Photo Story

Inserting myself into this vignette, my desire is to reveal a brief glimpse of religious expression provoked by the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in New York City.
