More about this photo gallery

Wandering into New York City’s Columbus Park one day at lunchtime, I suddenly felt myself an outsider in my own city, surrounded by Chinese-Americans enjoying each other’s company over cards, Chinese chess, music, and the news.  Yet, the more I continued to explore and observe life in this park day after day the more I became struck by the paradox of simultaneous otherness and sameness.  Here were foreigners playing unfamiliar games, but wearing baseball caps with familiar logos.  Here were strange musical instruments, but playing familiar tunes.  Here was a people that I did not belong to, but enjoying a warm communal experience that reminded me of what I desire in my own life.
